REMP: The Renewable Energy Mitigation Program

In 2000, the City of Aspen and Pitkin County launched the Renewable Energy Mitigation Program (REMP).  Designed to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency, REMP is the first program of its kind in the world.  By requiring new homes to mitigate their environmental impacts, REMP has raised nearly $8 million for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

How does REMP work?  The Pitkin County and Aspen building codes require a strict “energy budget.”  Homeowners who wish to consume additional energy for snowmelt or outdoor pools or spas have the option of installing a renewable energy system onsite or paying a renewable energy mitigation fee instead.  CORE manages the REMP funds with oversight from others. REMP fees are dedicated to energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in the Roaring Fork Valley.  To view projects that have been funded by REMP, please see our REMP Projects page. Our Facebook page has even more detailed descriptions and more photos.

The long-term goals of the REMP program are to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, while speeding the Valley’s progress toward a sustainable energy future.  REMP fees are available to project teams that are truly interested in making a difference.  Call CORE to see if your project may qualify.  Please note that funds are limited and grants and terms are subject to change without notice.
